What Is Affiliate Online Marketing And How Does It Work?

When looking into all of the online marketing strategies and tactics that you can use to help promote your website one phrase that you come across time and time again is ‘affiliate marketing’. In layman’s terms, you are using one website to drive traffic to another. More often than not, a person looking to make money through their blog or website will initiate this tactic by contacting those who they would be happy to advertise.

It has been long believed that Amazon was the creator of affiliate marketing; it began in 1996 as an associates program and now possesses around half a million merchants. Amazon would encourage small businesses to register with them so that they could place links and even banner advertisements on the site; when a visitor clicked on one of these ads, the website owner would be paid a small commission for driving traffic.

So, how does an affiliate marketing tactic work? More often than not, the person who owns the blog or website will look for people to write for him; the more content that he is able to produce, the more attention his site will receive and the more traffic will be driven to his advertiser’s own sites. He will often offer an incentive to potential writers, such as a small payment or even a share in the advertising revenue that he is making.

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding this online marketing tactic, however, as there is a very real possibility of it becoming more about spam then about providing valuable information. Because many popular keywords will be used in the content, the website often receives quite a high ranking – people who are looking for information and the search engines often find this aggravating, which led to a bunch of affiliate websites becoming penalized.

Nowadays, there has been a distinctive shift away from affiliate online marketing because it has come to the attention of advertisers that visitors do not want to be assaulted by this sort of material when visiting a website. It is important to keep in mind, however, that there is a time and a place for this tactic; you just have to make sure that you have chosen the way that you use affiliate marketing wisely so that you don’t effectively lose traffic in the process.
